The gauge metal for signs depends on how large the sign will be, where it will be installed, the metal used, and the design. We use a thicker gauge for signs that will be installed outdoors to ensure they will last and stand up to the weather.
The United States Code of Commerce and Trade lists the standard gauges of sheet meta. Most indoor signs are made of sheet metal between 1/8” and 3/16” thick; outdoor signs use 3/16” or thicker gauge steel. For large and especially heavy signs, we can even use 1/4″ thick steel.
Expect your metal signs to last 10-12 years. We use high-quality, corrosion-resistant materials and for illuminated metal signs, long-lasting LEDs for a hassle-free experience. Getting the sign serviced annually can prolong the life of the sign. Note that extreme weather conditions and wind damage can reduce the sign’s lifespan.

Metal signs made of stainless steel and aluminum alloys will not rust, though they may develop a matte appearance over time. Signs made of iron can rust if they are not painted or if they develop chips in the paint. We advise annual servicing and repainting to maximize the sign’s lifespan and address any rusting before it becomes widespread.
